As we celebrate Father’s Day, I want to give tribute to one of the fathers of our faith, a man who has stood for the healing power of Jesus Christ for over fifty years—my father, Oral Roberts.
I have so many wonderful memories of growing up as his son! They are alive and burning in my heart. He built a foundation of the Word of God and faith in me that I still live by today. I am teaching them to my children and to the students at Oral Roberts University.
My father taught me:
God is a good God. The devil is a bad devil, and God is totally good. There is no badness in God, and there is no goodness in the devil. And when you see Jesus in the Word, you’ve seen the Father. Jesus came to take off of you what the devil put on you, to take out of you what the devil put in you, to put back on you what the devil took off, and to put back in you what the devil took out.
Stay little in your own eyes. My father learned this from his mother, who said, “Son, stay little in your own eyes, obey God, and you will bless the world.”
The Word of God is alive. My father taught me to study the Word and meditate on it so that out of the abundance of my heart, my mouth will speak life when I get into a jam.
Jesus is a healing Jesus. Jesus was moved with compassion when He saw sick people. Compassion is an irresistible urge to rid a person of their problems, and that compassion is in me.
My life is a seed. My love, time, money, prayers, compassion, and anointing can be planted to God as seeds. As I sow them, God will cause them to grow and multiply them back to me.
When I was in the African nation of Uganda for a crusade, I was asked if I would like to see Lake Victoria, which forms the headwaters of the powerful Nile River. As I stood at the edge of that lake, I was reminded of how important having a source is. To live, you have to have a source, and God is that Source!
I began thinking about that mighty river and what would happen if its source dried up. All throughout the continent of Africa businesses, industry, farm animals, wildlife, farming, and people would die, because life itself flows through that river.
Then I wondered what would happen to us if we had no source? Our lives would also dry up. John 3:27 AMP says, A man can receive nothing [he can claim nothing, he can take unto himself nothing] except as it has been granted to him from heaven. [A man must be content to receive the gift which is given him from heaven; there is no other source.] Our Source of life is God.
An eternal flame, which represents the fire of the Holy Spirit, tops the Prayer Tower on the Oral Roberts University campus. Sometimes in bright sunlight you can’t see the flame, but if you could get to the very top of the Prayer Tower, you would feel the heat coming from the flame. It’s always burning.
Just like that flame, God is always present. You may not be able to see Him physically, but you can feel His presence. The power of God flows through your life when you make Him the Source of your life. No matter what you’re going through—when it seems that all is lost and there is no answer—God is there. Trust in Him, for no matter if your problems are physical, financial, emotional, spiritual, or marital, He is your Source for every need in your life!
A favorite Scripture of mine is Mark 11:22-24. It talks about having faith in God and speaking to your mountain so it shall obey you.
But it’s the rest of that passage that not everybody enjoys quoting. “And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses” (v. 25,26 NKJV).
I truly believe that we have to forgive so God can forgive us, but I’ll be perfectly honest. There are times that I’d rather beat the tar out of somebody than forgive them! At one such time the Lord spoke to me, “Can you forgive from your heart right now?” And I said, “No.” Then He said, “Do you believe that I can forgive?” “Absolutely,” I replied. “Then would you let the Christ in you forgive them?” He asked. I admitted, “That much I can do.”
The Lord reminded me of another familiar Scripture, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). In our own humanness we may not be able to forgive others, but Christ can give us the strength to do things that we can’t do alone.
Then I prayed, Father God, I pray for the Holy Spirit inside me, the Jesus Christ that I’ve accepted into my heart, to rise up and do a forgiving work in me so I can forgive this person.
If there is someone you feel you are unable to forgive, ask the Lord to help you release the hurt, the pain, and the anguish, not in your strength, but in God’s. And forgive yourself. We’re not perfect, but through Christ we can do all things!
Our lives are wrapped up in our relationship with God. In Deuteronomy 28 He says, in essence, “If you will obey My commands and put Me first in your life, blessings will come upon you!” On the other hand, He says, “If you disobey My Word and go your own way, you’re going to walk away from the Source for your life.” (See Deuteronomy 28:1,15.)
The source of the Mississippi River is Lake Itasca in Minnesota. If you were to cut off its source, the river would stop. In the same way, if we cut off our relationship with God, we cut ourselves off from our Source. Then His blessings stop.
Some people say God is cruel. No, God isn’t cruel. It’s cruel when we decide to walk away from the very Source of the blessings of life. God is a good God and a God of blessing. Moses said, “If you will hear the voice of God and do what He commands, He will bless you in all you do. But if you turn away from God, refuse to hate your sin and choose to hold on to it, then the curses are still there.” Christ has redeemed us from those curses—but only if we reject them by repenting and by confessing our faith that Christ died for us.
It’s the same way with disease. Second Peter 2:24 says that we were healed by the stripes Jesus suffered on the Cross. God doesn’t have to do anything to heal us; He has already done it! Everything we need has already been provided. Christ isn’t going to the Cross again. It’s done! It’s finished! By our faith we can reach out and say, “Yes, Lord, I will serve You. I will follow Your will. You are the Source of my total supply.” Then, by faith, we allow His forgiveness for our sins and His healing power into our lives!
SPKM JOHNNY JOHNSON You have no choice. You can forgive them providing that you recognize the fact that as long as you do not forgive them, you have just tied yourself to that person that you don’t like for the rest of your life and that meant, of course, that that person controls your life from now on out. You get ready to buy a suit of clothes and if you think about that person who is going to criticize your suit, you won’t buy the clothes. If you’re a lady and you want to fix your hair a certain way and you know that person is going to be critical of that, you won’t fix your hair that way even though you like it that way. So that person from that point on begins to control your life. And whatever happens to that person happens to you. If that person goes to hell, you’re going along with them.
SPRR RICHARD ROBERTS But, Johnny, I’ve been discriminated against all my life. Everyone has called me names all my life and there’s no way for me to get out of this little one-room room that I’m living in. My children are on dope and they’re out on the streets and I can’t control them and everything has gone wrong, and this is supposed to be a great country but here I am and what can I do about it?
SPKM JOHNNY JOHNSON I’ll tell you what you can do about it. I always carry a pencil with me and if you take a look at this pencil, you’ll notice there’s something very different about this.
SPRR RICHARD ROBERTS It has two erasers.
SPKM JOHNNY JOHNSON Two erasers, okay. So if it has two erasers that means that the life of a person that says, “I can’t do anything,” all these things then his life is like this pencil. There is no point to it. (APPLAUSE) And it says here, life without Jesus Christ is like this pencil; there is no point to it. So that person needs to know Jesus Christ immediately and they will have a point to their life, that he can always come back to that. And Jesus Christ is love. And if that person cannot find love in his heart for everyone, then he cannot accept himself because most people dislike themselves and they have a guilt feeling over that. Someone will always say, “Gee, I don’t like the way that I look.” That’s because of the fact that he’s not accepted what God has given that person. Always use all the available resources that God has given you and you will have a point in your life if you accept Jesus Christ. But it doesn’t matter… see, discrimination is not that person discriminate; you discriminate yourself. If you will say, “I know that person is going to discriminate against me cause I’m black,” you’ve chosen to be discriminated against. But supposing you say, “I know that that person is not going to discriminate against me cause I’m black and beautiful,” so that person can’t discriminate against you. I’m too pretty. (APPLAUSE) And if you say that to yourself, you’ll believe that and nobody is going to make you feel bad about it because of th fact that someone called you a name or called you black or whatever they may call you. You will look at them and say, “Thanks for the compliment. I didn’t think you would ever notice.” And so you’ve moved on from one to the other. It’s the most beautiful life I’ve ever had in my life. I even had that when I was the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. There was an admiral and he didn’t know that I was black and all of a sudden we landed in my big aircraft and I had four stars on that and always the senior person steps off first. So I stepped off first and all of these Navy admirals were standing there waiting when I stepped off and they just looked past me. I said, “Hi,” and they said, “Hi,” and I walked on and I stood over there by myself. And the next person came off and they kept looking and finally my aide, who was white, he walked off. So when he walked off of there they said, “I thought the Secretary of the Navy was coming.” So he said, “He is here.” And he said, “Well, where is he? Is he still on the plane?” He said, “No, that’s the one standing way over there.” And he looked over and he saw me and he came over and he said, “Sir, I sure don’t want to see my fitness report when you get back to Washington, D.C.” And I said, “No, I forgive you for just what you’ve done.” He said, “Can you please forgive me?” I said, “I forgave you when you did that because, you see, if you had only looked at my spirit and the love that I gave in a handshake, then it wouldn’t have mattered whether I was Assistant Secretary of the Navy or not. You would have greeted me. So I want to tell you that I forgive you and love you.” And you know, this guy stood there with tears running down his cheek and said, “What manner of man are you?” (APPLAUSE) And I said, “I love Jesus.” And he says to me….. so, you see, I could have chosen to be angry. I could have chosen that and that guy did everything that he possibly could…. that was on Guam at the time…. he had everything laid out for me and he came back to my quarters every hour: “Is there anything else, Mr. Secretary? Anything. Whatever it is..” And then my aide looked at him and said, “Sir, I’d sure hate to be in your shoes.” He said, “I sure hate to be in my own shoes right now.” It’s all because of the fact that I treated him that way. When I got ready to leave, he was the man to stand in front and I got the highest commendation from the United States Navy that has ever been given to a civilian high executive person, and he said, “I want to be the one to present it to him because he’s one of the greatest men that I’ve ever seen. He really practices the love that he talks about.” (APPLAUSE)
What do you do when the attacks of life come? Do you get into despair? Do you focus on your inability to solve your problems, or do you focus on God‘s ability and His faithfulness to bring you through?
Don’t Discount a Miracle
In 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, the apostle Paul speaks personally and gives us a picture of the dreadful problems he was going through when he said, We are troubled on every side, yet we’re not distressed; we’re perplexed, but we’re not in despair; we’re persecuted, but we are not forsaken; we’re cast down, but we’re not destroyed.
In other words, Paul was saying, “The attacks of life come to all of us. But when you’re hit, don’t give up and don’t get into fear. No matter how big or how bad the problem is, God is bigger! Stand strong in your faith and declare, ‘My God will deliver me!’”
Isn’t that what Moses said when he stood at the edge of the Red Sea, with Pharaoh’s armies chasing him from behind? He said, Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord (Exodus 14:13).
Moses and the Israelites were surrounded by trouble on every side. There was a roaring sea in front of them and a whole army of Egyptians thundering down on them from behind.
It seemed as if there was no way out, but God brought a great miracle. He divided the waters of the sea so the people could walk across on dry land!
And in the midst of whatever problem you’re facing, God can do the same for you!
With the holidays fast approaching, I want to talk to you about something very important—debt. Statistics show that most Americans overspend their holiday budgets by 15% to 30%. And that often means that they go into debt.
I hate debt, don’t you? The Bible says that when we are in debt, we are a servant to the lender (Proverbs 22:7). I believe debt is the scourge of this nation. And since March of this year, this ministry has been on an all-out assault against debt. According to Bible, I believe God wants you to be free from the oppression of debt!
Start Where You Are
Second Kings 7:3-8 KJV tells about four lepers in the city of Samaria who rose up and, with God’s help, got free from the oppression that was facing them.
The Samaritans were starving because an enemy had surrounded their city. These lepers were desperate as they sat outside the city gate, just like those of us who may be in a dire situation today…facing debt, sickness, disease, fear, family problems, or any form of lack.
But those men looked at each other in their seemingly hopeless condition and said, “Why sit we here until we die?” (v. 3).
I believe we could ask ourselves the same question: Why do we sit in the middle of our debt and lack any longer without doing something?
Those lepers took action. They stood up and, in the condition they were in, they began a march of faith to the enemy camp
When You Step Out,
God Can Step In
It looked crazy for these sick men—who had no armor, no swords, no shields—to get up and march toward the enemy. They had nothing…except their faith. But when we make the decision to obey God, faith is enough to start with!
As a seed of faith, the lepers set out on a march against their enemy. And when they stepped out, God stepped in and did something supernatural for them!
As the lepers got close to the enemy camp, God began to multiply the sound of their footsteps. Their enemy heard what sounded like a massive army and fled for their lives, leaving their food and belongings behind! The lepers sent word of their victory back to the people of Samaria, who came to the camp and carried away the spoils. It was a miracle!
When those four desperate men marched in faith toward the enemy, God met them supernaturally at their point of need and caused their enemy to flee!
Sow Your Way to Freedom!
Do you need God to do something supernatural in your life today? I believe God can bring it to pass when you sow a seed for your own deliverance like the lepers did!
When you and I take a step of faith and plant our seed unto God, I believe satan trembles…because he knows the power of a seed multiplied!
I challenge you to do what I’ve been doing these last few months. Determine in your heart to get out of debt and stay out, then begin to sow seeds of faith like you’ve never sown before. Then make a declaration of your faith that you are going to sow your way out of debt and never be bound by it again!
CPS: Three full wonderful days. They will be back Wednesday night in time for their church, but all today and tomorrow and Wednesday, all the pastors–well, just about, there’s so much power here because there’s so many pastors here with power.
LR: That’s right, the Lord is really going to do a wonderful thing. I really believe that. When ministers, evangelists, pastors, apostles, prophets of God get together and minister the Word of God, I really believe something’s going to happen. (That’s right.) Amen. Amen. (Applause) Well, in a minute Rhonda’s going to be with us, but right now the ORU Singers are ready to sing a wonderful song, “This Is the Day That the Lord Has Made.” Let’s give them a welcome as they sing. (Applause)
ORUS: Singing “This Is the Day” (Applause)
RR COMMENTARY OFFER (Applause)
LR: Amen. You know, Richard wrote this commentary out of the hurts and the needs of his heart and also the things in the Bible that ministered to him the most. The Four Gospels and the book of Acts really came alive to Richard while he was writing this, and he was recalling all the things that touched his life and touched his ministry, the Scriptures that led him to salvation, the Scriptures that taught him on healing. And, you know, as you look over your life, especially being the son of a man like Oral Roberts, and knowing these Scriptures and having them burned into your heart and seeing the miracles of God come alive as you go through your childhood and to turn around and write about how these Scriptures touched Richard’s The best part about the Four Gospels and the Book of Acts, the way Richard wrote the Commentary is so you can understand it, so you can read it. It’s not long, it’s not theological. It’s just a man’s version of what the Bible meant to him and how the Bible came alive in his life. And I really believe it will be a help to you. So if you really want to understand the Four Gospels and the Book of Acts, just write for the Commentary today. I really believe it’s a blessing.
CPS: Oh, yes, and there’s so many people that do not understand. You read the Word and especially if you’re a new Christian or you haven’t really been in the Word. Maybe you’ve been a Christian for several years but you haven’t been in the Word. And it doesn’t make sense to you when you read it and so you put it back down. And you pick it back up and you want to read and have such a desire, but you cannot understand it. Well, Richard has made it simple enough and he’s explained it so normally, every day, and that’s what God–you know, it’s written from a time that at that point was everyday language. (That’s right.) But now it’s not so everyday and when we read it it doesn’t always make sense to us. But Richard has explained it, and it will make sense to you. And so it will help you. It will help you.
LR: Welcome to Make Your Day Count. I am so glad to be here standing in the midst of the Abundant Life Prayer Tower. I am Lindsay Roberts. We’re here amidst the Prayer Group right here at the Prayer Tower. And I’m telling you something, the Abundant Life Prayer Group is on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with these particular prayer partners where we are—we’re live in Tulsa right now at two o’clock—and these people are sitting here bathing this atmosphere in prayer.
You know my husband Richard Roberts. We’ve been doing The Hour of Healing every night live from right here. And when we walked into this atmosphere, I said, “Richard, you know what? The Hour of Healing has taken on a new level, a new dimension,” when we have felt this presence of the prayer of the faithful people here in this place.
And so we said, “You know what? Let’s think about doing Make Your Day Count here.” Now we’ve never done this before. As many years as we’ve done Make Your Day Count, we’ve never done it live from the Prayer Tower. So here we are.
And I was reading a scripture the other day that really was the catalyst for me to do this live from standing right here. Now I have to tell you, I’m used to Richard being standing right next to me and kind of holding me up and lifting me up. This is a whole new day. Lindsay’s doing it by herself. Oh, mercy! Now you all pray for me, and I’m going to pray for you.
I’m going to tell you how this started. If you look in the book of Galatians, and it says in Galatians, chapter 5, verse 25, “If we live in the Spirit, then let us also walk in the Spirit. If we live in the Spirit, let us walk in the Spirit.”
You know, we want spiritual prayers from a spiritual God, but we’re walking in the flesh and getting into fear and doubt and worry and unbelief and all kinds of garbage that we don’t believe we need to be a part of. And yet we want God’s spiritual answers.
Well, it’s very simple. If you want God’s spiritual answers, then you’ve got to walk in the Spirit. Okay, well, how do you do that? Well, the Bible says very clearly you don’t walk in the flesh; you walk in the Spirit. You walk by faith, which is a spiritual atmosphere.
Well, I had a person tell me as I was coming in here—you’ve seen my friend Melissa on the program many times—and as I was walking in here, she said, “If we don’t acknowledge spiritual warfare, we’re going to turn into spiritual road kill.”
And that hit me. If we don’t start acknowledging spiritual warfare, that satan comes against us to steal, to kill, and to destroy, if we don’t start recognizing that these attacks are not just flesh and blood, but they’re powers and principalities and rulers of darkness—and the Bible says, spiritual hosts of wickedness—if we don’t recognize that some of the junk that we go through is not just flesh and blood, but it’s an attack of satan himself coming against the body of Christ, trying to get us into fear and doubt and unbelief and trying to get us to believe we’ll never get out of this mess, “Oh, my goodness!” and just walk in fear.
We’ve got to get into the spirit and do what the Spirit of God says. I was looking at the scripture in 1 Peter 5:8. It says, “Satan goes about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” So then if you take that scripture, okay, we know satan is a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. How is it that he devours us or doesn’t devour us?
Go to Malachi 3, and it said, “God rebukes the devourer for our sakes.” When we bring tithe and offering into the storehouse, God promised He would rebuke the devourer so satan couldn’t go around as a roaring lion devouring us.
Okay, so I thought about that, and I said, “All right, Lord, we just have got to stop what we’re doing and pray.” The Bible says, “Men ought to pray and not faint.” Maybe you’re in a situation right now—and like I said, we’re live right now here in Tulsa, Oklahoma. And if you want to call the Abundant Life Prayer Group, pick up your telephone, 918-495-7777. They’re taking prayer requests. They’re bringing them to me right now.
And as they’re doing this, we’re going to pray. We’re going to pray warfare prayers. Satan is attacking you in a spiritual war. So we have to attack him back—we don’t wrestle flesh and blood, the Bible says. This is not about people. He said, “You do not have the privilege of fighting flesh and blood, powers and principalities and rulers of darkness.”
Okay, well how do you fight them? He said the only fight we get into is the good fight of our faith. So we are going to begin to pray, and we are going to pray for you. We’re going to pray for me. We’re going to pray for whatever needs come in to the Abundant Life Prayer Group.
And right now live from the Prayer Tower, we’re going to pray for you and begin to believe that what has come against you, whether it’s spiritual, physical, financial, emotional, whatever it is that’s coming against you, we’re going to believe that God is going to open you the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing where there’s not room enough to receive it and rebuke the devourer for your sake, as His Word in Malachi promises. So we’re going to do that today. We want you to stay tuned. We’re going to take a break, and I’m going to walk over there and sit down. And we’re going to continue to pray. But please remember, during this break, you can pick up your telephone and dial 918-495-7777. And these are the prayer partners you’ll be talking to right here that I’m standing in front of. And you’ll be talking to them. They’re going to bring those prayer requests live to me, and we’re going to begin spiritual warfare in your behalf. So stay tuned. We’re going to be right back.
Spreading God’s Message
I recently conducted a Healing Rally in England, where only a tiny percentage of the population attends a church of any kind. Other rallies are in the planning stages, and God is speaking to me about other nations where we must go and take the message of Jesus’ soon return to the earth.
On Thursday, October 7, we began airing The Place for Miracles, a weekly 30-minute program on ABC Family network (6:30 a.m. Eastern and Pacific times). With the help of our friends and Partners, every week we now have the opportunity to reach a potential 81 million households with the life-changing message of the Gospel!
We are also in the process of expanding the Abundant Life Prayer Group’s ability to answer more telephone calls that ever before. Every day we receive more than 2,000 urgent calls for prayer. That number is increasing ever day. And with our current outdated phone system, we are missing many of those important calls from people who desperately need someone to agree with them in prayer for a miracle. We have to do better and we know it.
We are working in every way we know how to take God’s saving, healing, delivering message of the Gospel to the nations…because we’re gearing up for the great harvest of souls that will come to know Jesus in these last days.
I believe the time is short, and compared to the numbers of people still to be reached with the Gospel, the laborers are very few.
I encourage you to plant your seed of faith today and request a copy of Wake Up! Jesus Is Coming Sooner Than You Think, which includes my dad’s vision, along with a prophetic word of confirmation and interpretation from evangelist Kenneth Copeland. You may want to order copies for your friends and family as well.
When you plant your seed, not only will you be helping us reap a harvest of souls for eternity, but I believe God can bring the harvest of miracles you need in your own life and the lives of your loved ones!
